Hamper Mag launched DEWS NEWS in 2026, an ongoing project in honor of the Dock Ellis Baseball League and the annual Dock Ellis World Series — affectionately known as “DEWS.” 

Originally founded in Pittsburgh in 2011, the Dock Ellis Baseball League is an organization of gender-inclusive, politically progressive sandlot baseball teams across the US, named after former MLB pitcher Dock Ellis. (There’s a great NPR story about it!)

While Dock is widely remembered as the guy who pitched a no-hitter on acid — DEWS NEWS is dedicated to sharing a fuller picture of his life, particularly his activism, sobriety, and volunteering.

Outside of baseball, Dock Ellis was a substance abuse counselor, racial justice activist, sickle cell disease and health justice advocate, and volunteered in prisons and community centers serving at-risk youth. 

DEWS NEWS hopes to embody Dock’s love of baseball, but also his bravery, activism, and dedication to personal growth and community engagement. 

DEWS NEWS runs as a daily paper during the annual Doc Ellis World Series & makes zines, stickers, and other goodies about Dock, baseball, harm reduction, friendship, and mutual aid all year.
